Recruit for a day

Victoria Police Legacy Young Adults group is a recent initiative designed to keep our 16-22 year old legatees connected with each other and to enable Victoria Police Legacy (VPL) to continue to support them through a sometimes turbulent period of their lives.

17 legatees, all young adults and part of Victoria Police family that have lost a parent either in the line of duty or through illness or accident, attended the “Recruit for a Day” program held at the Police Academy on the 26th September, 2014.

The day was designed to give the legatees a little taste of what a day in the life of a recruit would be like. They also experienced what their mum or dad had to do to become a member of Victoria Police and to allow those who may aspire to follow in their parents footsteps to see first hand what the Academy has to offer. The day included:

  • meals with current recruits;
  • a defensive tactic session;
  • physical training;
  • a classroom lecture;
  • meeting with Chief Commissioner Ken Lay and Assistant Commissioner Kevin Casey; and
  • a glimpse of a Graduation Ceremony.

All legatees had a fantastic experience and came away from the day full of pride with what their parents were part of and the Police family they are still part of today. This will be a day they will remember forever.

VPL thanks Leading Senior Constable Sue Gillet and Leading Senior Constable Jane Franklin, along with the rest of the staff at the Academy for organising such a successful day and for accompanying legatees on the day. Legatees were also supported by VPL Youth Events Coordinator Andrea Lyons and VPL volunteer Detective Senior Constable Kate O’Neill

The continued support VPL receives from members of Victoria Police who make fortnightly contributions ensures that events such as these can take place. A big thank you to our contributors.
