On Tuesday 10th June, a great group of Police Legatees were treated to an unforgettable behind-the-scenes experience with the AFL Umpires at Marvel Stadium!
From touring the players’ and umpires’ rooms, testing out state-of-the-art VR game tech, exploring the ARC Control Centre, and hearing an inspiring talk from Victoria Police Senior Sergeant and AFL Goal Umpire Adam Wojcik, it was a night packed with learning, laughter, and new experiences.
Police legatees even hit the field to try their hand at goal, field, and boundary umpiring drills! Did you know AFL umpires make hundreds of calls per game with a 93% accuracy rate? Incredible!
Huge thanks to the AFL, Umpire AFL, and everyone who helped make the evening so special. A huge shoutout to our amazing Police Legatees and incredible VPL Volunteers for joining us!
We left with these important parting words of Stephen McBurney (AFL Umpiring Director): “We professional umpires have all the support and facilities to help us umpire. At the local level around the country there are kids and people from the local communities umpiring without the same support. When you are next at your local footy match please offer your support to the umpires making this great game possible.”
