With You Every Day: The Lasting Impact of Police Legacy

Published: Tuesday 17 June 2025

Victoria Police Legatee Nicholas (Nick) Stefaniw, now a proud serving member of Victoria Police, lost his father to suicide - a veteran police officer of nearly 30 years.

In Nick’s words: “The support that police legacy has given us has been ongoing since the day of my father's passing…even to this day there is ongoing support that I am forever grateful for.”

Victoria Police Legacy was there for Nick through his schooling, on camps where he formed lifelong friendships, and on the journey to becoming a police officer himself.

As Nick shares, “The support, the mentorship, the friendship that Police Legacy has given me has been invaluable. It’s immeasurable in words what Police Legacy does, because they are there for you when you least expect it and when you most need it.”

His story is just one example of how Police Legacy helps shape futures, offering guidance and care at the moments when families need it most.

Many assume Police Legacy only helps families of officers killed in the line of duty. The truth is, they support police families after any loss - whether on duty or off, including when a police officer loses a spouse. Our help is immediate and long-term, from bereavement grants to scholarships and peer support.

On National Police Legacy Day, let’s celebrate the work of Australia’s eight Police Legacy organisations, and shine a light on the work that ensures their families are not defined by tragedy, but shaped by hope, resilience, and possibility.

As the campaign says: Police Legacy - with you every day.

National Police Legacy Day is celebrated every day on 17 June.
